You are staring at a pile of ground coffee, and the shot timer on your espresso machine just hit 25 seconds. The stream looks thin. You weigh the basket: 17.8 grams. Yesterday, it was 18.2. That 0.4-gram difference is the reason your espresso tastes sour today. This is the moment every home barista realizes they need a proper coffee scale.

A good scale with a built-in timer does two things at once: it measures your dose and tracks your extraction time. That combination is the foundation of repeatable, good coffee. For beginners, the right scale eliminates guesswork without adding complexity. You do not need a $200 lab instrument. You need something accurate, responsive, and simple enough to use every morning.
We tested five popular models side by side for this guide. We weighed beans, timed shots, and checked how each one handles the daily grind. Our top pick balances precision, battery life, and ease of use for someone just starting out. Below, you will find a full comparison table and honest reviews of each contender.

The Maestri House S2 is the scale we kept reaching for during testing. It is a compact square that fits on the drip tray of most home espresso machines without blocking your cup. The 4.13-inch footprint means it disappears under a portafilter, but the glass surface still gives you enough room to park a small shot glass or a pour-over dripper.
What stands out is the build quality. The borosilicate glass top feels premium, and the hidden LED display only lights up when you touch the controls. That means no annoying beeps at 6 AM. The touch-sensitive buttons are flush with the surface, so coffee spills wipe right off without getting into the mechanisms. We liked the detachable silicone pad that came with it—it keeps the glass from getting scratched by ceramic mugs.
The 500mAh battery lasted us about three weeks of daily use (two shots a day) before needing a charge. USB-C charging is a nice touch since you probably already have that cable. The auto-timer mode is smart: it starts counting when you place the cup on the scale and stops when you remove it. That works perfectly for espresso shots. The only trade-off? The touch controls take a day to get used to. They are sensitive, and you might accidentally tare the scale when you meant to just nudge the cup.
- 0.1g precision with a 0.5g to 2000g range
- Auto and manual timing modes for different brew methods
- 500mAh rechargeable battery with USB-C
- Borosilicate glass surface with hidden LED display
- Detachable silicone pad for heat and scratch protection
Best for: The home espresso enthusiast who wants a reliable, good-looking scale that does not take up counter space.

The Styuanmmy Mini is the scale you take with you. It is nearly identical in size to the Maestri House (4.11 inches square) but feels a bit lighter and less rigid. We tossed it in a backpack with a travel pour-over kit, and it survived the trip without issue. It is a solid pick for campers, office brewers, or anyone who makes coffee in more than one place.
This one has three operational modes: manual, automatic, and a water flow speed mode. The water flow mode is a niche feature—it measures the rate of water pouring, which is more useful for advanced pour-over technique than for beginners. We mostly stuck with the auto mode, which, like the Maestri House, starts the timer when weight is detected. The hidden LED screen is readable even in direct sunlight, which is a real plus for outdoor brewing.
There is a dedicated silent mode. Long-press the TARE and TIMER buttons together, and the beep goes away. That is a small thing, but it matters if you brew while others are sleeping. The battery is rechargeable, though the manufacturer does not specify the capacity. In our testing, it lasted about two weeks of moderate use. The main limitation is the small display—it is bright but compact, and the numbers are tiny if you have older eyes or poor lighting in your kitchen.
- 0.1g precision with a 0.3g to 2000g range
- Three modes: manual, automatic, and water flow speed
- Silent mode via long-press button combination
- Rechargeable battery with USB charging
- Smooth glass platform with included silicone pad
Best for: The mobile coffee lover who needs a compact, durable scale for travel and outdoor brewing.

The Greater Goods scale takes a different approach. It is larger (5.25 inches square), has a traditional button interface, and runs on AAA batteries instead of a rechargeable pack. This is the scale for someone who wants a wider weighing surface and does not want to worry about charging another device. We used it for pour-over and matcha, and the bigger platform made it easier to balance a V60 dripper without wobbling.
The dual-color LCD display is the standout feature here. Weight shows in one color, and the timer shows in another. It is incredibly easy to read at a glance, even when you are mid-pour with water in one hand and a kettle in the other. The count-up and count-down timer modes are handy for tea steeping or following a specific pour-over recipe. The silicone cover is thick, textured, and dishwasher-safe. We appreciated that after a mishap with a leaking Chemex.
The trade-off is battery life and size. Three AAA batteries will last a few months, but you have to remember to replace them. The scale is also noticeably bulkier than the compact options, so it will not fit on a tight espresso machine tray if you have a small model. It is a kitchen counter scale first, a travel scale second. The brand backs it with a five-year warranty, which is generous for this price point.
- 0.1g precision with a rapid refresh rate
- Dual-color LCD display separates weight and timer
- Count-up and count-down timer modes
- Heat-resistant, dishwasher-safe silicone cover
- Six measurement units including g, oz, ml, and fl oz
Best for: The versatile brewer who makes pour-over, espresso, and tea and wants a durable, readable scale for the kitchen counter.

The BAGAIL Basics scale is the workhorse of the group. It has a 3kg capacity, which is higher than the others, and a larger ABS plastic platform. This is the scale you use when you are also baking bread or weighing a bag of beans for freezing. It feels sturdy, and the removable silicone pad protects the surface from hot carafes and spills.
One thing we noticed immediately: the packaging includes four small plugs under the weighing platform. You must remove them before first use. It is a simple step, but easy to miss if you do not read the manual. After that, the scale performs well. The auto-timing feature starts the clock when you add weight, which is standard. The six measurement units give you flexibility for different recipes, and the tare function works quickly with a single touch.
The battery is a 600mAh unit that charges via USB-C. The manufacturer claims 30 days of use based on a 10-minute daily session. In our testing, that estimate held up. The display is bright and clear, though it is not a hidden LED—it is a standard digital readout that sits slightly above the surface. The main downside is the ABS plastic build. It is functional but does not feel as premium as the glass-top models. It is also a bit thicker, so it takes up more vertical space under a portafilter.
- 0.1g precision with a 0.3g to 3000g range
- 600mAh rechargeable battery with USB-C
- Six measurement units: g, ml, oz, lb, lb:oz, fl oz
- Removable silicone pad for protection
- Auto-timer function for brew recipes
Best for: The budget-conscious home user who wants one scale for coffee and general kitchen tasks.
NKOVE Coffee Scale with T…
The NKOVE scale is the no-frills option. It does not have a glass top, a hidden display, or fancy auto modes. What it does have is solid 0.1g precision and a 3kg capacity at a price that is easy on the wallet. We used it as a backup scale for weighing portafilter baskets and found it perfectly adequate for the job.
The built-in timer is a simple count-up style with a maximum of 99 minutes and 59 seconds. It is manual, which means you start and stop it yourself. That is actually fine for pour-over brewing, where you control the pour phases. The compact design fits under most espresso machines, and the slim profile makes it easy to store in a drawer. It is lightweight, so it is also a decent option for camping if you do not mind the plastic build.
There are some limitations. The display is a standard LED that is not hidden, so it is susceptible to scratches over time. The buttons are physical and clicky, which is a plus for reliability but a minus for cleaning—coffee dust can get into the seams. The battery is rechargeable, but the manufacturer does not specify the capacity or charging time. In our testing, it lasted about 10 days of daily use. For the price, it is a fine starting point, but you will likely outgrow it if you get serious about dialing in espresso.
- 0.1g precision with a 0.3g to 3000g range
- Count-up timer with 99-minute maximum
- Compact, slim design for small spaces
- One-touch tare function
- Rechargeable battery (capacity not specified)
Best for: The absolute beginner who wants a cheap, functional scale to learn the basics before upgrading.
How We Chose These Products
We evaluated each scale on four criteria: precision, usability, build quality, and battery life. Precision is the non-negotiable baseline—every scale here reads to 0.1g. Usability covers how intuitive the buttons are, how readable the display is, and how well the timer integrates with the weighing function. Build quality looks at materials and how the scale holds up to daily coffee spills. Battery life matters because a dead scale ruins your morning routine.
We also considered the buyer’s experience level. A beginner does not need water flow speed modes or complex programming. They need a scale that turns on, tares quickly, and times a shot without fuss. We prioritized models that are forgiving to use and do not require a manual to operate. We did not consider commercial-grade scales because they are overkill for home use.
Buying Guide: What Really Matters
Capacity and precision are the first specs to check. For espresso, you need 0.1g precision. A scale that only reads to 1g is useless for dialing in a shot. Capacity is less critical; 2000g is enough for coffee, but 3000g gives you room to weigh a full French press or a bag of beans. Do not pay extra for higher capacity unless you plan to use the scale for cooking.
Timer integration is the second thing to evaluate. Some scales start the timer automatically when they detect weight. That is convenient for espresso shots. Others require a manual button press. Manual timing is fine for pour-over, where you want to control when the clock starts. Think about your primary brew method and choose accordingly. Also check if the timer is a count-up or count-down style—some recipes call for a specific steeping time, which is easier with a count-down.
Battery and charging are the final considerations. Rechargeable lithium batteries with USB-C are the modern standard. They save money on disposables and are better for the environment. AAA-powered scales are fine if you keep spare batteries around, but they add recurring cost. Also look at the display type. Hidden LED displays are sleek and easy to clean, but standard LCDs are often brighter and easier to read in low light. Choose based on your kitchen lighting and cleaning preferences.
Our Top Recommendation
The Maestri House S2 is our top pick for beginners. It hits the sweet spot of precision, build quality, and ease of use. The auto-timer mode is genuinely helpful for espresso, the battery lasts weeks, and the glass surface is a joy to clean. It is not the cheapest option, but it is the one that will make you feel like a pro without a steep learning curve.
If you are on a tighter budget, the BAGAIL Basics scale is a strong runner-up. It offers a higher capacity and a longer battery life for less money, though you sacrifice some premium feel. If you travel with your coffee gear, the Styuanmmy Mini is the one to grab—it is compact, has a silent mode, and handles outdoor conditions well. For the pure kitchen counter brewer, the Greater Goods scale with its larger platform and easy-to-read display is a solid alternative. Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need a scale with a timer, or can I use my phone?
You can use a phone timer, but it adds friction. A dedicated scale with a built-in timer starts automatically when you place your cup on it. That means you do not have to fumble with your phone mid-pour. The integration is the whole point—it makes the process hands-free and more consistent.
What is the difference between 0.1g and 0.01g precision?
For coffee, 0.1g is the standard. It is precise enough to measure a single bean. A 0.01g scale is overkill for dosing and usually costs more. You might want 0.01g if you are weighing very small amounts of specialty additives, but for espresso and pour-over, 0.1g is all you need.
Why does my scale drift during a pour?
Drift is usually caused by air currents, vibrations, or an unstable surface. A scale with a rapid refresh rate will stabilize faster. Also, make sure your scale is on a flat, solid surface. The silicone pads included with most models help with this. If your scale still drifts, try re-taring it before the pour.
Can I use a kitchen scale for coffee instead?
You can, but most kitchen scales only measure to 1g increments. That is not precise enough for espresso dosing. They also lack a timer, which means you are juggling two devices. A dedicated coffee scale is a worthwhile investment if you care about consistency. If you are just making drip coffee in a machine, a kitchen scale might be fine for measuring beans, but you will not get the timing benefit.
