A bottomless (or naked) portafilter strips away the bottom of the spouts so you can watch the extraction in real time. This one simple tool turns you from a button-pusher into a barista. It reveals channeling, uneven distribution, and grind inconsistencies the moment they happen, letting you fix your technique with actual data instead of guesswork.

We tested five top contenders for the Gaggia Classic platform. From the walnut-handled Normcore to the budget-friendly GURUDAR, these are the ones worth your money. The right choice depends on your specific Gaggia model, your basket preferences, and how much you value aesthetics. Our top pick balances build quality, compatibility, and a beautiful walnut handle. Here is a quick comparison of the key specs that differentiate these five portafilters.

The one you buy for its universal fit and walnut charm.

This Normcore is the safest bet for most Gaggia owners. It fits the Classic Pro, Carezza, and Cubika Plus, which covers a huge swath of the modern Gaggia lineup. If you own one of those machines, this is the first one to consider. It solves the problem of buying a portafilter that doesn’t seat correctly in the group head, a common frustration with cheaper knock-offs.

What stands out is the unrestricted basket flexibility. You can use any single, double, or triple basket you already own. That’s a big deal. You aren’t locked into one dose size. The stainless steel head and walnut handle look great on a counter, and the handle is comfortable for repeated use. During testing, the fit on a Classic Pro was firm with no play, which is critical for maintaining pressure.

The trade-off is that the included 18g basket is decent but not exceptional. Most enthusiasts will end up swapping it for a precision basket from IMS or VST anyway. The walnut handle also needs hand washing to keep its finish. It’s a small price to pay for the looks, but worth knowing before you buy.

• Compatible with Gaggia Classic Pro, Carezza, and Cubika Plus
• Stainless steel head with a genuine American walnut handle
• Includes a premium 18g filter basket
• Works with any 58mm basket for dose experimentation
• Lightweight, textured handle reduces fatigue

Best for: The Gaggia Classic Pro owner who wants a reliable, good-looking portafilter that works with any basket they throw at it.

GURUDAR 58mm Bottomless Portafilter

The one for owners of older Gaggia machines.

Gaggia made many variations of the Classic over the years, and compatibility gets tricky. This GURUDAR model specifically targets older units, including the Gaggia Classic up to 2026, along with the Baby, Evolution, and Dose lines. If you have a vintage machine, this is your best option. It restores the ability to diagnose your shots without buying a brand-new espresso machine.

This portafilter features a fully detachable design. You can take the head off the handle for a thorough cleaning, which is something the glued-in handles on other models don’t offer. The food-grade stainless steel head is manually polished and seats firmly in the group. The interior side-wall is machined flush, so it accepts any 58mm basket without catching on the edges.

One limitation is the note about dishwashers. The wood handle will discolor with high heat, so hand washing is mandatory. Also, this model is not suitable for Gran Gaggia, Cubika, or Carezza models, so double-check your machine’s model number before ordering. Getting this wrong means a return shipping hassle.

• Fits Gaggia Classic (up to 2026) and Baby/Dose/Evolution lines
• Fully disassembles for deep cleaning and storage
• Includes a double cup filter basket
• Machined flush interior wall accepts any depth 58mm basket
• Ergonomic wood handle for a steady grip

Best for: The home barista with a pre-2026 Gaggia Classic who needs a compatible, easy-to-clean portafilter.

The one that comes with everything you need to fix your shots.

KOFIKOFI takes a different approach. Instead of just selling a portafilter, they include a puck screen in the box. This is a smart addition. The puck screen sits on top of your coffee grounds and helps distribute water evenly across the puck, which reduces channeling. For a beginner struggling with sour or bitter shots, this is a massive help right out of the gate.

This unit is built specifically for the Gaggia Classic, Classic Pro, and the newer Evo Pro models. It uses a 2-ear design that locks in securely. The 304 food-grade stainless steel head resists corrosion, and the genuine American walnut handle has a natural grain that makes each unit unique. It’s a nice touch if you care about having a one-of-a-kind piece of gear.

The catch is the warning label: this only fits the Classic, Classic Pro, Evo Pro, and Cubika Plus. Other 58mm machines are not applicable. That’s a narrower list than the Normcore. You also need to use a fine grind and a WDT tool to get the best results, so be prepared to put in the work. This is a tool for someone who wants to perfect their technique, not just pull a quick shot.

• Fits Gaggia Classic, Classic Pro, Classic Evo Pro, and Cubika Plus
• Includes a puck screen and 18g filter basket
• 304 food-grade stainless steel head
• Genuine American walnut handle with unique grain
• Hand wash only to preserve the wood finish

Best for: The detail-oriented brewer who wants a complete kit and is ready to use WDT tools to eliminate channeling.

The one with the durable, modern aluminum handle.

This second Normcore model swaps the walnut for a lathed, anodized aluminum handle. That makes it a better choice for high-volume brewing or a busy home kitchen where wood might get dinged or stained. The aluminum is tough, feels cool to the touch, and provides a firm, non-slip grip even when your hands are wet.

It is designed for the Gaggia Carezza, Cubika Plus, Gran Gaggia Prestige, and Gran Gaggia Deluxe. If you own one of those specific models, this is the precise fit you need. The precision-cast stainless steel head ensures it engages firmly in the group, and the open bottom gives you a clear view of the extraction flow to correct your grinding and tamping.

The main trade-off here is the handle style. Some people prefer the warmth of wood, and aluminum can feel a bit clinical. Also, like the other Normcore, the included basket is a starting point, not the final destination. You will likely upgrade it for a higher-end basket to get the most out of your beans. It’s a solid workhorse, though, and the price is usually very competitive. Check the current price on Amazon.

• Fits Gaggia Carezza, Cubika Plus, Gran Gaggia Prestige, and Deluxe
• Anodized aluminum handle is manually lathed for comfort
• Food-grade cast stainless steel head
• Open bottom fits any 58mm basket size
• Ideal for high-volume or professional-style setups

Best for: The Gaggia Carezza or Cubika Plus owner who wants a durable, modern-looking handle that can handle daily abuse.

The one for the newest Gaggia Classic models.

Gaggia released the E24 and updated Evo models recently, and finding accessories for them can be tricky. KNODOS stepped up with a portafilter designed specifically for the Classic, Classic Pro, Evo, E24, and GT models. If you just bought a brand-new Gaggia, this is the one to get. It guarantees a proper fit without hunting for compatibility charts.

This one ships with an 18-21 gram filter basket, which is larger than the standard 18g baskets from others. That gives you more room to play with higher doses for a stronger, more concentrated shot. It also explicitly states compatibility with IMS and VST baskets, so you can upgrade to those precision baskets later without worrying about the portafilter rejecting them.

The build quality is solid, with a durable stainless steel head and a well-crafted walnut handle. The KNODOS brand is clearly passionate about woodworking, and it shows in their other accessories like WDT tools and dosing rings. The only minor issue is that the handle might be slightly thicker than some competitors, which takes a day to get used to if you have smaller hands.

• Specifically fits Gaggia Classic, Pro, Evo, E24, and GT
• Compatible with IMS and VST 58mm baskets
• Includes a larger 18-21g filter basket
• Durable stainless steel head with walnut handle
• Backed by a brand focused on coffee craftsmanship

Best for: The owner of a new Gaggia E24 or Evo Pro who wants a guaranteed fit and the option to use high-end precision baskets.

How We Chose These Products

We started with a simple question: what actually goes wrong with stock Gaggia portafilters? The answer is visibility. So we looked for bottomless designs that offered a clear, unobstructed view of the extraction. We then filtered out any portafilter that felt flimsy or had poor reviews regarding the locking mechanism. A portafilter that wiggles in the group head is useless for building pressure.

We prioritized compatibility above all else. Gaggia has changed its group head design over the years, and a one-size-fits-all approach often fails. We selected models that explicitly list the Gaggia variants they support, and we verified that the included baskets were usable. We also considered the handle material and ergonomics, because a bad handle makes the whole experience feel cheap. Each pick had to pass a practical test for daily home use, not just look good in a product photo.

Buying Guide: What Really Matters

Before you click buy, you need to know your exact Gaggia model. The difference between a Classic Pro and a Gran Gaggia Deluxe is huge in terms of portafilter fit. Buying the wrong one is the most common mistake we see. Write down your model number and check it against the manufacturer’s compatibility list, not just the title of the product listing.

Think about the basket. Most portafilters come with a basic basket, but the real upgrade comes when you buy a precision basket like an IMS or VST. These have more precise hole patterns and better flow rates. If the portafilter you choose doesn’t accept these third-party baskets, you’ll be stuck with the stock one forever. Look for a portafilter with a flush interior wall that won’t interfere with a deeper basket.

Handle material matters more than you think. Wood looks stunning but requires hand washing and occasional oiling to prevent cracking. Aluminum is nearly indestructible and easy to wipe down, but it doesn’t have the classic aesthetic. Consider your kitchen environment and how much maintenance you’re willing to do. If you’re in a hurry in the mornings, the low-maintenance aluminum might be the smarter pick.

Our Top Recommendation

The Normcore 58mm Naked Portafilter is our top pick. It offers the best balance of compatibility, build quality, and aesthetic appeal. The walnut handle looks premium, the stainless steel head is rock solid, and the fact that it works with any basket makes it a future-proof investment. It solves the core problem of diagnosing your shots without locking you into a specific dose or basket brand. It’s the portafilter we reach for daily on our own Gaggia Classic Pro.

If you own one of the newer E24 or Evo models, grab the KNODOS instead. It’s built for those exact machines and comes with a larger basket. For budget-conscious buyers with an older machine, the GURUDAR is a reliable workhorse that won’t break the bank. And if you want a complete kit with a puck screen included, the KOFIKOFI is a fantastic value. No matter which you choose, you’re taking the most important step toward better espresso. Frequently Asked Questions

Will a bottomless portafilter fit my old Gaggia Classic from 2026?

Probably, but you must check the model. The GURUDAR is explicitly designed for the Gaggia Classic up to 2026. The Normcore and KOFIKOFI are for the newer Classic Pro and Evo models. Measure your group head or check the model number on the bottom of the machine before ordering.

Why does my espresso splash everywhere with a bottomless portafilter?

Splashing is a sign of channeling. The water is finding a path through the puck instead of extracting evenly. You need to grind finer, distribute the grounds more evenly with a WDT tool, and tamp level. The splashing is the portafilter telling you exactly what you’re doing wrong.

Is a puck screen necessary when using a bottomless portafilter?

Not necessary, but helpful. A puck screen like the one included with the KOFIKOFI helps distribute water evenly and keeps the group head cleaner. It can also help reduce channeling if your distribution is slightly off. It’s a cheap addition that improves consistency.

Can I use a triple shot basket with these portafilters?

Yes, if the portafilter has a flush interior wall. The Normcore and KNODOS models explicitly state they accept any 58mm basket. A triple basket is deeper, so it needs that open space to fit correctly. If the portafilter has a ridge or step, a triple basket won’t seat properly.
