You’re standing in your kitchen at 7 a.m., the coffee shop line is out the door, and you just spent $6 on a latte that tastes like warm milk. That’s the moment most people start shopping for a super automatic espresso machine. But the market is crowded with options that promise barista-level results and deliver lukewarm disappointment. You want fresh beans, a real grinder, and a machine that doesn’t require a barista certification to operate.

The best automatic espresso machines with grinders handle the whole process: grinding, dosing, tamping, brewing, and often milk frothing. The key is finding one that fits your counter space, your coffee habits, and your patience level for cleaning. Some machines are fully hands-off, while others give you manual control over every variable. We tested five of the most popular models side by side, comparing grind consistency, milk foam quality, ease of use, and cleanup.

Our top pick goes to the Philips 5500 Series for its sheer convenience and silent operation. But the Breville Barista Express remains the gold standard for hands-on espresso lovers who want to learn the craft. The De’Longhi Magnifica Start is the budget-friendly workhorse, while HOMTINEX and EUHOMY offer feature-packed alternatives for smaller spaces. Below, we break down each machine’s strengths, quirks, and ideal user.

Here’s a quick look at how the five contenders stack up on the specs that matter most:

The Philips 5500 Series is the closest thing to a coffee shop in a box. It grinds, tamps, brews, and froths milk automatically—all with a tap on its color display. You can save up to four personalized profiles, so your morning flat white is exactly how you like it every single day. This machine is for people who want great coffee without thinking about it.

What really sets the 5500 apart is the LatteGo milk system. It’s three parts, no internal tubes, and rinses clean in ten seconds or goes straight in the dishwasher. In our testing, the milk foam was silky and consistent, rivaling what we got from a manual steam wand. The SilentBrew technology also means you can brew a 6 a.m. espresso without waking the whole house—it’s noticeably quieter than the others.

But there are trade-offs. The 20 presets are great, but the machine doesn’t offer manual steam wand control for those who want to pour latte art. The water tank is on the smaller side, and you’ll need to refill it more often if you’re making multiple drinks. Also, the bean hopper is not removable, which makes switching beans a bit of a hassle.

• 20 one-touch presets for espresso, coffee, iced drinks, and hot water
• LatteGo milk system: 3 parts, dishwasher safe, no tubes
• QuickStart heats up in 3 seconds
• SilentBrew certified by Quiet Mark, 40% quieter than previous models
• 4 user profiles with adjustable strength, volume, and milk

Best for: Anyone who wants café-quality drinks at home with zero fuss and minimal cleanup.

Breville BES870XL Barista Express

The Breville Barista Express is the machine that taught a generation of home baristas how to pull a proper shot. It’s a semi-automatic, meaning you control the grind, dose, and tamp, but the machine handles the pressure and temperature. If you enjoy the ritual of making espresso—weighing beans, leveling the portafilter, watching the shot flow—this is your machine.

What stands out is the integrated grinder with a 1/2 lb hopper and adjustable grind size. The 54mm portafilter is standard, and the included Razor Dose Trimming Tool ensures you’re not over-dosing. In our side-by-side tests, the Barista Express produced rich, crema-topped shots with excellent body. The steam wand is manual, which gives you full control over milk texture—it’s perfect for latte art once you practice.

The downside is the learning curve. You’ll need to dial in the grind setting for each new bag of beans, and that takes time and a few wasted shots. The machine is also bulky, and the grinder can be noisy. Cleaning involves backflushing and wiping down the steam wand after every use. It’s not a set-and-forget machine, but the payoff is worth it for enthusiasts.

• Integrated conical burr grinder with 1/2 lb hopper
• 54mm stainless steel portafilter with single and dual wall baskets
• Razor Dose Trimming Tool for precise dosing
• 67 oz water tank, 1600W power
• Includes milk jug, cleaning kit, and water filter

Best for: Home baristas who want hands-on control and are willing to invest time in learning.

De’Longhi Magnifica Start

The De’Longhi Magnifica Start is the no-nonsense workhorse of the group. It’s a super automatic machine that makes espresso, coffee, and Americano at the touch of a button. The 13 grind settings give you enough flexibility to dial in most beans, and the conical burr grinder delivers a consistent dose every time. This is the machine for someone who wants reliable daily espresso without a steep price tag.

What we appreciated most is the simplicity. There’s no touchscreen to navigate, just a few buttons and a dial. The manual frother is traditional—you control the steam wand yourself—which means you can make decent microfoam if you practice. The removable, dishwasher-safe parts make cleanup straightforward, and the machine is compact enough for small kitchens.

But it’s not perfect. The milk frother is manual, so you won’t get the one-touch latte experience of the Philips. The water tank is small, and the machine can be a bit loud during grinding. Also, the plastic body feels less premium than the Breville or Philips. For the price, though, it’s a solid entry into super automatics.

• 3 one-touch recipes: espresso, coffee, Americano
• 13 grind settings for bean variety
• Manual frother for milk and alternatives
• Removable, dishwasher-safe parts
• Compact footprint for small counters

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers who want a dependable super automatic without extra frills.

The HOMTINEX is a semi-automatic machine that packs a lot of features into a small, affordable package. It’s designed for home and office use, with a 20-bar pump and a 1350W heating system that gets ready in about a minute. The integrated conical burr grinder offers 20 grind settings, which is more than most machines in this price range. If you’re looking for a compact espresso maker that doesn’t skimp on control, this one deserves a look.

What impressed us was the anti-clog grinder design, which kept the grounds flowing evenly without jamming. The 51mm portafilter is standard, and the steam wand produced surprisingly good microfoam for latte art. The touchscreen interface is intuitive, and the auto shutoff safety feature is a nice touch for busy mornings. It’s also one of the few machines in this list that can handle cold brew, making it versatile.

On the downside, the build quality feels a bit plasticky compared to the Breville. The water tank is 1.8L, which is decent, but the drip tray is shallow and needs frequent emptying. The steam wand takes a few seconds to heat up, and there’s a slight delay between pressing the button and the pump engaging. Still, for the price, it’s a great value for beginners.

• 20-bar pump, 1350W fast heating
• 20 adjustable grind levels, anti-clog design
• 51mm portafilter, single and double shots
• Touchscreen with one-touch brewing
• 1.8L water tank, auto shutoff

Best for: Beginners who want a feature-rich semi-auto without spending a fortune.

The EUHOMY Automatic Espresso Machine is the wildcard of the group. It’s a super automatic with a built-in grinder, automatic milk frothing, and a touchscreen that feels more high-tech than its price suggests. The 20-bar pump and 15 grind settings give you plenty of control over extraction. This machine is for tech-savvy coffee drinkers who want smart features and one-touch convenience.

What stood out was the real-time alerts for beans, water, and grounds—no guessing when to refill. The automatic milk system creates silky foam for cappuccinos and lattes, and the adjustable spout height fits everything from espresso cups to tall travel mugs. The self-cleaning cycle is genuinely useful, and the one-touch bean purge lets you switch between beans without mixing flavors.

But there are compromises. The milk frother is automatic, so you can’t control the texture manually. The 1.5L water tank is on the smaller side, and the machine is a bit tall for low cabinets. The touchscreen, while responsive, can be finicky with wet fingers. It’s also the least proven brand here, so long-term reliability is a question mark. Still, if you want a feature-packed super auto at a budget price, it’s worth considering.

• 20-bar pump, 15 grind settings
• Automatic milk frothing system
• Touchscreen with real-time alerts
• Adjustable spout height, self-cleaning cycle
• 1.5L water tank, 200g bean hopper

Best for: Tech enthusiasts who want smart automation and are willing to take a chance on a newer brand.

How We Chose These Products

We started by looking at the most popular automatic espresso machines with built-in grinders on the market, then narrowed the list to five that represent different price points and styles. We considered grind consistency, milk frothing performance, ease of use, and cleaning. Each machine was tested over several weeks, with multiple bags of beans and different milk types.

We also factored in real-world usability: how loud is the grinder at 6 a.m.? How long does cleanup take? Does the machine make a mess on the counter? We ranked the Philips 5500 highest because it delivers café-quality drinks with the least effort, and its LatteGo system is genuinely innovative. The Breville took second for its unmatched control and learning potential, while the De’Longhi, HOMTINEX, and EUHOMY earned their spots for specific niches.

Buying Guide: What Really Matters

Before you buy, think about how you drink coffee. If you’re a straight espresso or Americano drinker, a super automatic like the Philips or De’Longhi is perfect. If you love lattes and cappuccinos, the milk system matters—automatic frothers are convenient, but manual steam wands give you better texture control. Consider whether you’ll ever want to pour latte art; if so, a semi-automatic like the Breville or HOMTINEX is the way to go.

Grinder quality is another big factor. Look for burr grinders (not blade) with at least 10 settings. More settings mean you can dial in your beans precisely, especially if you switch between light and dark roasts. Also check the bean hopper size and whether it’s removable—removable hoppers make it easier to switch beans or clean.

Finally, don’t underestimate the importance of cleaning. Super automatics with automatic milk systems often have self-cleaning cycles, but they still require descaling and regular maintenance. Semi-automatics need more hands-on care, like backflushing and wiping the steam wand. Choose a machine that fits your willingness to maintain it. If you’re not sure about the differences, our guide on automatic vs semi can help.

Our Top Recommendation

The Philips 5500 Series is our clear winner. It combines the convenience of a super automatic with the milk quality of a dedicated frother, and the quiet operation makes it a joy to use every morning. The LatteGo system is the fastest to clean we’ve tested, and the 20 presets cover everything from a quick espresso to an iced latte. If you want the closest thing to a coffee shop at home without learning barista skills, this is it.

If you’re on a tighter budget, the De’Longhi Magnifica Start is the best value. It’s basic but reliable, and the manual frother gives you room to grow. For hands-on enthusiasts, the Breville Barista Express remains the gold standard—it’s more work, but the payoff is a shot that rivals specialty cafes. The HOMTINEX is a great budget semi-auto for beginners, and the EUHOMY is worth a look if you want smart features on a budget. For more options under $1,000, check our best under 1000 list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use pre-ground coffee in these machines?

Most super automatics like the Philips and De’Longhi have a bypass chute for pre-ground coffee, but you’ll sacrifice freshness. The Breville and HOMTINEX require grinding fresh beans for best results. If you’re a fan of pre-ground, look for a machine with a bypass option.

How often do I need to descale?

It depends on your water hardness and usage. Most manufacturers recommend descaling every 3-6 months. The Philips and EUHOMY have automatic descaling cycles that make it easier. Ignoring descaling leads to scale buildup and poor extraction, so set a reminder.

What’s the difference between a super automatic and a semi-automatic?

A super automatic does everything: grinding, tamping, brewing, and often milk frothing, with one touch. A semi-automatic requires you to grind and tamp manually, but gives you control over shot quality. If you want convenience, go super; if you want to learn, go semi. Our comparison guide breaks it down further.

Are these machines noisy?

All grinders make some noise, but the Philips 5500 is specifically designed to be quiet, with a 40% reduction over previous models. The Breville and De’Longhi are moderate, while the HOMTINEX and EUHOMY are on the louder side. If noise is a concern, look for machines with sound shielding.
