You grind fresh beans, heat water to the right temperature, and pour it over the grounds. Then you wait four minutes, press the plunger, and pour. But the coffee comes out muddy, bitter, or cold. A bad French press ruins a simple ritual.

The right one comes down to three things: filter quality, material, and how easy it is to clean. A fine mesh filter keeps grit out of your cup. Glass lets you watch the brew, but steel holds heat longer. And if you can’t take the plunger apart, coffee oils build up and turn everything rancid.
We brewed with five popular models side by side, using the same beans, grind size, and water temperature. Here is what we found, plus a full buying guide for anyone who wants a cleaner, richer cup at home.
Here is how the five models compare on the specs that matter most.

Veken French Press Coffee
The Veken glass press is a 34-ounce workhorse that keeps plastic away from your coffee. Every surface that touches the brew is either 304 stainless steel or food-grade silicone. That matters if you have ever tasted coffee that picked up a faint chemical note from a cheap plastic lid.
The 4-layer filter is the standout feature here. We brewed a coarse-ground Ethiopian bean and the cup came out clear, with no sludge at the bottom. The high borosilicate glass handles thermal shock well, so pouring boiling water straight in did not crack it. We also used it for cold brew and loose leaf tea, and it handled both without complaint.
The trade-off is the glass carafe. It is durable for glass, but you still have to handle it with care. The plunger assembly comes apart easily for cleaning, but the glass itself is hand-wash only. If you drop it, it will break. The compact size does fit into a backpack, which makes it a decent camping companion.
- 34 oz capacity makes 4 standard cups
- 4-layer stainless filter traps fine grounds
- Borosilicate glass resists cracks up to 360°F
- No plastic touches the coffee at any stage
- Disassembles for thorough hand cleaning
Best for: Home brewers who want a plastic-free, sludge-free cup and occasionally take their press on the road.

This second Veken model shares the same 4-layer filter and plastic-free design, but swaps the glass for a 304 stainless steel body. That single change makes a big difference in daily use. The steel carafe holds heat far longer than glass, so your fourth cup is still hot when you pour it.
We found the steel version also feels more rugged. It survived a knock off the counter during testing without a scratch. The filter performs identically to the glass model, producing clean, grit-free coffee. The double-wall construction keeps the outside cool to the touch, so you won’t burn your hand pouring.
The downside is that you lose the visual feedback. With glass, you can see the bloom and judge when the grounds have settled. With steel, you are brewing blind. It is also heavier, which makes it less ideal for backpacking. The steel body needs a bit more effort to rinse out, since you cannot see residue left at the bottom.
- Double-wall steel keeps coffee hot for over an hour
- Same 4-layer filter as the glass version
- Rugged build survives drops and travel
- Cool-touch exterior prevents burns
- No plastic touches the brewing surface
Best for: People who drink slowly, work outdoors, or want a press that will survive years of heavy use.

Utopia Kitchen offers a budget-friendly 34-ounce glass press that does not cut corners on the filter. The 4-filter sieve system includes an 80-mesh screen, which is finer than what many presses in this price range use. We brewed a dark roast and the cup came out clean, with a rich mouthfeel and no bitter grit at the end.
The package includes a coffee spoon, which is a small touch but handy for measuring grounds and stirring the bloom. The borosilicate glass handled rapid temperature changes well, and the ergonomic handle made pouring comfortable. For the price, it delivers a surprisingly refined cup.
The weak point is the lid. It is plastic and does not seal as tightly as the pricier models. During testing, we noticed a little steam escaping around the edges. The instructions recommend hand-washing the lid, and the glass carafe is dishwasher safe, but we found hand washing kept the filter cleaner longer.
- 80-mesh filter catches ultra-fine particles
- Includes a stainless coffee spoon
- Borosilicate glass is resistant to thermal shock
- Dishwasher-safe carafe and plunger
- Lightweight and easy to carry
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers who want a clean cup without spending a lot.

Secura builds a tank. The entire carafe, inside and out, is 18/8 304 stainless steel. There is no glass to shatter and no plastic to stain. This press feels like it will outlive every other gadget in your kitchen. We tested it for a week straight and it showed zero signs of wear.
The 3-layer filter does a solid job, though it is slightly less fine than the Veken 4-layer design. We noticed a tiny bit of sediment in the last sip, but it was not unpleasant. Secura includes two extra screens, so you can stack them for a finer brew. That flexibility is a nice touch for people who like experimenting with grind sizes.
Every part is dishwasher safe, which is rare for a French press. The cool-touch handle and knob make pouring safe, even when the carafe is full of near-boiling water. The main drawback is that the steel body hides the brewing process. You cannot see the bloom or judge the extraction visually.
- 18/8 stainless steel interior and exterior
- Includes 2 extra filter screens
- Fully dishwasher safe
- Cool-touch handle and knob
- 34 oz capacity for 4 cups
Best for: Families or offices that want a nearly indestructible press and hate hand washing.

Bodum is the name most people think of when they hear French press. The Brazil model is their classic entry-level press, made in Portugal with high-heat borosilicate glass. At 12 ounces, it is designed for single servings, which makes it perfect for one person who wants a quick cup without brewing a full pot.
The stainless steel plunger and filter do a decent job, but the single mesh screen is coarser than the multi-layer filters on the other models here. We noticed more sediment in the cup compared to the Veken or Utopia. The brew itself still tasted clean, just not as polished.
The body, handle, and lid are BPA-free plastic. That keeps the weight down, but it also means plastic touches the brew. The plastic lid does not seal tightly, so heat escapes faster than with the steel models. This is a fine starter press, but serious coffee drinkers will likely outgrow it.
- 12 oz capacity for a single cup
- High-heat borosilicate glass carafe
- BPA-free plastic frame and lid
- Stainless steel plunger and filter
- Made in Portugal
Best for: Solo drinkers or travelers who want a lightweight, iconic press for one cup at a time.
How We Chose These Products
We picked five models that represent the main styles buyers actually choose between: glass versus steel, budget versus premium, and single-serve versus full pot. Each one was tested with the same beans, ground on the same setting, and brewed with water at 200°F. We timed the steep, pressed at the same speed, and tasted each cup blind.
Our scoring weighed filter performance most heavily, since that determines whether your coffee is smooth or muddy. Next came material quality and heat retention, then how easy the press was to take apart and clean. We also noted any design flaws, like loose lids or awkward handles, that became obvious only after repeated use.
Buying Guide: What Really Matters
Start with the filter. A fine mesh screen, ideally with multiple layers, keeps grounds out of your cup. Coarse single-mesh filters let sediment through, which makes the coffee taste gritty. Look for at least a 3-layer construction if you want a clean finish.
Then decide between glass and steel. Glass lets you watch the extraction and is easier to gauge, but it breaks and loses heat fast. Steel holds temperature for over an hour and survives drops, but you brew blind. If you drink your coffee quickly, glass is fine. If you sip slowly or work outdoors, steel wins.
Cleaning matters more than most people think. A French press that does not fully disassemble traps old coffee oils in the mesh, which turns your next brew bitter. Check that the plunger and filter come apart easily. Dishwasher-safe parts are a bonus, but hand washing keeps the filter working longer. Regular cleaning prevents buildup, and if your press ever gets clogged, a simple vinegar rinse fixes it.
Our Top Recommendation
The Veken glass French press is our top pick. It delivers the cleanest cup of the group thanks to the 4-layer filter, keeps all plastic away from the brew, and offers a versatile 34-ounce capacity that works for hot coffee, cold brew, and tea. The glass is thick and handled boiling water without issue during testing.
If you want better heat retention and a tougher build, grab the Veken steel version instead. It is the same filter with a rugged body, ideal for offices or camping. On a tight budget, the Utopia Kitchen press gives you 80% of the performance for less money. And if you only ever brew one cup, the Bodum Brazil is a lightweight, classic option that gets the job done.
Frequently Asked Questions
What grind size should I use in a French press?
Use a coarse grind, about the size of sea salt. Fine grounds slip through the mesh and make the cup muddy. If your press has a multi-layer filter, you can go slightly finer, but coarse is always safer.
How long should I steep the coffee?
Four minutes is the sweet spot. Steep longer and the coffee turns bitter. Steep less and it tastes weak and sour. For cold brew, leave it in the fridge for 12 to 16 hours instead.
Can I make tea in a French press?
Yes. The filter works perfectly for loose leaf tea. Add the leaves, pour hot water, steep for 3 to 5 minutes, and press. Just wash the press thoroughly afterward, or your next coffee will taste like tea.
Why does my French press coffee have grounds in it?
Your grind is too fine, or the filter is not seated properly. Check that the mesh screens are stacked correctly and the plunger is pushed all the way down. If the problem persists, switch to a coarser grind.
